Previously, I wrote on weather forecasting.
Happily, I expand on this topic.
Via a paper in Science magazine/website Google’s AI unit has the potential to take weather forecasting to a new level and can do so on a laptop or home computer.
Google DeepMind's AI meteorology model, GraphCast, has soared beyond traditional weather forecasting methods, accurately predicting global weather conditions up to 10 days in advance, according to a study published in the journal Science. Outperforming the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts' (ECMWF) system in 90% of 1,380 metrics, including temperature and wind speed,
GraphCast is not only faster but also about 1,000 times more energy-efficient, making waves in meteorological advancements. Despite its limitations, the upbeat outlook is that this AI-based approach is seen as a valuable complement to existing weather prediction techniques, sparking optimism for more precise forecasts in the future
All jokes about “First they came for the weatherman” aside, this is really great, as much as generative AI has everybody's attention to write essays or summarize history, this feels like something much more consequential. It also picks up on my Australian wildlife theme, it’s what the Government can do positively, this breakthrough used the data and expertise of the European Centre for Medium Range Forecasting to work.
