White Hydrogen is Mysterious, but Good
Is it possible Mother Nature has its own climate solution?
TL;DR
White Hydrogen reserves, which first came to note via an accident involving a well and cigarette in Mali, have been found or theorized in France and Switzerland in large quantities.
Early estimates put this deposit as ranging from 6 million to 250 million metric tons! That’s a lot, and hold great potential for future clean energy generators and uses.
What is White Hydrogen?
Glad you asked:
It is a naturally occurring, though somewhat rare, gas found within the Earth’s crust. Hydrogen you have heard of, it is among the most abundant elements in our universe, it typically combines with other molecules. Since it’s naturally occurring, there isn’t the need for energy intensive production processes. To contextualize this: costs for white hydrogen production are approximately $1 per kilogram, while green hydrogen costs around $6 per kilogram.
Even better is the fact that combustion (generating energy from) of White Hydrogen produces only water. Making it even more eco-friendly than solar/wind and thus is seen by some as a potential driving force for aviation, shipping, and steel production.
