TL;DR

When the Saimaa seal was declared a protected species 40 years ago, there were only about 100 individuals living in Lake Saimaa now there are nearly 500! The numbers were dashed by a combination of nefarious bounties, killer cotton nets and rising global temperature, they have been revived with hard work of scientists, governments with a dash of public scrutiny.
