Oceans Good. Ocean Pollution Bad.
Let's celebrate some recent technologies that are making good things better.
The Ocean Cleanup is an Dutch non-profit whose name defines their mission.
Recently they have deployed the Interceptor 007 in the Los Angeles area (the Ballona Wetlands, specifically.) As you can sadly imagine, Los Angeles throws off a LOT of trash (some estimates are up to 5 pounds per person per day!)
The interceptor has two booms which stop then funnel trash which otherwise would head into the ocean. The trash is funneled and then collected into dumpsters.
Since it was launched in 2022, the Interceptor 007 has prevented 85 TONS of trash.
Think about that. That’s 85 tons of trash which could have ended up in the ocean, on beaches. 85 tons of trash. Stopped.
If that doesn’t blow your mind, I invite you to watch this little video about this interceptor’s predecessor, the 006 which was deployed in Guatemala. It stopped more than 935 TONS.
Nine-hundred and thirty five tons of trash.
Stopped.
Good.
