TL;DR:

Phobos, the Martian Moon is an anomaly to astronomists. Some think it’s a comet, captured by Mars’ gravity. Others think it (and it’s companion Deimos) are remnants of shattered asteroids.

The big thing is…

We don’t know!

But scientists are on it, and observation space missions are planned to solve this mystery.
