In October 4, 2010, a retaining wall at the Ajka alumina plant in Hungary failed more than 38 million cubic feet of highly alkaline red mud. The flooding of waste material killed 10 people, injured more than a hundred and eventually found its way into local rivers, killing many animals.
You see, Red Mud is a scourge. We, as a civilization, haven’t found a way to product Aluminum without it and it is extremely corrosive and deadly due to its high alkalinity and toxic heavy metals. It is usually “handled” via landfills or reservoirs which not only can fail and harm nearby people and environments but also incur massive capital expenditures on companies.
Sadly, the demand for steel and aluminum is forecast to increase by up to 60% by 2050.
But there is good news!
German scientists may have discovered a revolutionary way to transform Red mud into valuable resource conveniently labelled "Green Steel." The process involves a plasma furnace which breaks down red mud into pure iron and neutralizes harmful materials, leaving behind glass-like residuals for construction. A cleaner and more sustainable solution to a major problem within traditional steel production. It's a win-win for the environment and industry, turning waste into valuable resources and paving the way for a greener future.
