TL;DR:

It is believe that mosquitos have been around, causing itching I surmise, for over 217 million years.

There’s an actual mosquito fossil that dates over 125 million years.

The Oneida Native Americans even crafted lore about their battles with the meddlesome mosquito. It’s quite the tale. Two giant mosquitoes, a war party, and a horrible battle that ends poorly for all of mankind.

That’s a long history of itching. The mosquito has a lot of downside, they have impacted human migration, warfare, and have spread diseases like malaria, yellow fever, and Zika virus.

But, in an elegant solution, just published in Nature Microbiology, combining the smell of flowers, genetic modification and fungus scientists have created a floral scented solution that attracts and eliminates mosquitoes.
