How great is it that the story below is going to involve the following:
Scientists doing great stuff.
I learned there’s an an animal named the echidna
I learned there’s a mountain range named the CYCLOPS mountains!
A creature unseen since 1961 shows up on a trail!
Then, at the end, they casually drop mention of a tree-inhabiting shrimp!
I mean come ON! This is awesomely good. Welcome back wee echidna, we missed you so.
First video of this newfound critter:
So, what happened was/is:
A team of scientists, led by Oxford University, has rediscovered a long-lost species of mammal, the long-beaked echidna, in the Cyclops Mountains of Indonesia. This strange and ancient creature, named after British naturalist David Attenborough, had not been seen alive since 1961.
As the video shows, the echidna was seen in footage walking around in forest undergrowth.
What is an Echidna? Well, echidnas are one of those mammals, like the platypus, that can lay eggs.
But it GETS BETTER!
These scientists also discovered several new species during the expedition! Including a tree-dwelling shrimp and two new species of frog.
