An abundance of good things
Four new Octopi, Three pictures, Two added benefits and One Cool Name
Off the coast of Costa Rica…
Nealy three Kilometers below the ocean surface…
At the end of last year…
Researchers used a remotely operated submersible to discover or bring about:
Four Octopi!
Four new species of Octopus, and an entirely new octopus nursery, just the third known to science.
One of these species has been named. It will be known as the Dorado octopus (it was found on an underwater formation unofficially called El Dorado hill.) Continuing this posts fascination with names, this Dorado octopus is a type of (get ready for this genus) Muusoctopus, who are believed to have evolved to gather to brood their eggs in warmer water near the vents.
Three Magical Pictures!
Two added bits of goodness!
Training and specimens.
These undersea missions are also used as part of a campaign to find and educate early career researchers in how to lead deep-sea expeditions. AND! Over 300 different sea-stars, sea cucumbers and other specimens were collected and will be kept at the University of Costa Rica’s Museum of Zoology where these young researchers will be able to access/observe and study them.
One killer name!
That submersible? The one that led to all this stuff?
It has the ludicrously great name of SuBastian.
Trying to read a bestseller novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures. A little daunted, but since octopuses are good things, will carry on!
